I have a love hate relationship with discount stores like Nordstrom Rack. Sometimes I feel like I've hit the jackpot and gotten a great steal, when other times I feel like I'm paying for overpriced low quality items. To say the least, it can be very hit or miss.
For the longest time, I wouldn't step foot in Nordstrom Rack. Not out of the fear of dropping too much money, but just simply from the idea that it was similar to an outlet store, offering lower quality items. I had one bad experience and chalked it up to being the norm. Not until recently have I realized you have to know WHAT is a good item to purchase at the store to make your time worthwhile.
After my latest Nordstrom Rack haul, I've also realized that there is the perfect time to buy! With the perfect combo of knowing when to buy and what to buy you can walk away saving a large chunk of change with some great items in your possession! My hope is to give you a few tips, so that your next trip to Nordstrom Rack is a money-saving success! :)
What To Buy:
1. High End Designer Items!
One of my favorite sections to peruse in Nordstrom Rack is the designer area. They have some of my favorite brands, like Tory Burch and Kate Spade. Not only do they offer pieces at a fraction of the cost, you can find great deals when these items are on sale! This section is very similar to the "Runway" collection at T.J.Maxx. You can find some great unique designer pieces at a deeply discounted price!
2. Make Up and Beauty Items!
This is one of Nordstrom Rack's greatest hidden secrets. Sometimes this section can be hidden in a corner or in a light traffic area. So keep your eyes peeled! Some great, high-quality make up brands you can find in this sections are Stila, Smash Box, Lorac, and Too Faced. Laura Mercier stuff has been popping up too! If you're lucky you, you might be able to find some. ;) Next time you're due for a refresh on makeup, hit up Nordstrom Rack instead of Sephora, you'll end up saving a ton!
Nordstrom Rack's shoe selection is on point! It is so extensive and well organized. It makes me happy! :) I love how I can go right to my size and browse all different types of styles and clearance prices, in the same section! Not only is the selection great, but the quality and brands are great! Unlike some discount stores, Nordstrom Rack sells pretty much the same brands it does in its regular stores. You'll find that a majority of their shoes are genuine leather and include brands like Stuart Weitzman and Tom's shoes.
When To Buy:
1. Off the Rack Sale!
Honestly, unless I'm in a pinch and need a specific item, this is the only time I'll shop at Nordstrom Rack. They usually have these sales seasonally, when all of their sale items are an additional 25% off. This is the sale that I shopped, to get my latest deals! This time around I made a new discovery. All of the dresses are an extra 50% off, instead of the normal 25%! Praise Jesus! As a girly girl, this makes up a large percentage of my purchases at the store.
2. End of the Season!
During the end of a season is the best time to shop. This is when extra mark downs are made and items are put on clearance. Usually you can find great pieces that are still in season. If you're looking for a deeper discount, you may be able to find totally out of season items for over 60% off. Look for those lovely little circular racks with the red signs and you'll be sure to make a frugal discovery. :) The sale stickers Nordstrom Rack uses are great too! They make it very clear to see what price your paying, what the original price was, and what the percent off is.
A couple of weeks ago, I hit the jackpot at Nordstrom Rack! It was the inspiration for this post, and I thought I HAD to share the details of my buy. Since I'm not a frequenter of the store, I had no idea they were having their seasonal "Off the Rack" sale. I was just walking down the street head to T.J.Maxx, when I saw the sign and thought I would head inside and take a peek. All for the search of a good sale! :) Even though it was the last day of the sale, I was surprised to find so many goodies! One of my biggest discoveries was that instead of the usual extra 25% off, the dresses were an additional 50% off! I ended up buying 6 dresses. Most of which were under $10! Can you say wowzers?! (I did splurge on two that were $20, haha.) I also bought 3 pairs of shoes, all pretty much under $20! And I'm obsessed with all of them. I got a pair of paten leather slides and two pairs of heeled mule booties! :) In all, I ended up spending $130 and got 3 pairs of shoes, and 6 dresses! The cheapest dress being $7! As a frugal chick, I immediately felt guilty for spending that large chunk of change and texted my gal pals to confess. Only to find out they applauded me, saying they would have spent that much on one pair of shoes! Reassuring to say the least. ;)
